The British variant of coronavirus is 1.32 times more infectious than the original virus, a Japanese study has found.
The study by Japan’s National Institute of Infectious Diseases, which covered 803 cases of the British variant, compares with overseas studies that found the variant’s infectivity is 43% to 90% higher than the original’s.

One of the cases was linked to international travel, with the other still under investigation. The PHE also said two new cases of the P.1 coronavirus variant first discovered in northern Brazil had been reported, bringing the total number of reported cases of the variant in Britain to 12. The health authority said both new cases were linked to international travel with Brazil.

Published March 14, 2021 4:32pm The Philippines’ tally of COVID-19 cases reached 621,498 on Sunday with 4,899 new infections as five laboratories failed to submit data on time. The Department of Health said the new cases pushed the total active cases in the country to 48,157. Among these, 91.8% were mild, 4.2% were asymptomatic, 1.6% were critical, and 1.6% were in severe condition. Total recoveries also rose to 560,512 after 13,371 more patients overcame the respiratory illness. Meanwhile, 63 more fatalities brought the death toll to 12,829. The DOH noted that 12 duplicates were removed from the total case count, while 16 cases previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after final validation.

Detroit, Baltimore and Phoenix recorded the biggest recent rate of increases in Covid-19 cases, according to CDC data. Even so, the U.S. as a whole is on course for the fewest weekly infections since early October. Nationwide air travel reached 1.35 million people on Friday, a record during the pandemic.
