Roundhead Brewing will bring beer and pizza to Hyde Park this fall

Related Links Luis Espinoza has been tinkering with beer recipes as a home brewer for the past decade, but he’ll soon have a much larger brewing playground when Roundhead Brewing Co. opens in Hyde Park this fall. Founded by Espinoza and Craig Panzer, the brewery will put down roots in an old Hyde Park warehouse with a historic past. It’s also billing itself as the first Latino-owned brewery in New England Espinoza, who is Roundhead’s head brewer, is originally from Peru. Panzer and Espinoza first met in April 2019. Their kids played soccer together in the Jamaica Plain Youth Soccer program, and the fathers soon found common ground over their love of craft beer. Panzer had brewery experience, working at Otter Creek Brewing and Wolaver’s Organic Ales, while Espinoza’s 10-year home brewing credentials were coupled with 20 years experience working as a chef. 

State holds public hearing for Shattuck campus proposal – Jamaica Plain Gazette

On April 13, a public hearing was hosted by the state’s Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance (DCAMM) to present the project proposal for the Shattuck Hospital campus on Morton St. in Jamaica Plain, and to allow for public comment on the proposal.  The Shattuck Hospital plans to move to the Newtown Pavilion in the South End in 2024, and throughout a several year process, the community has been outspoken about what should be done with the campus site. The proposed plan includes turning the existing 13 acre campus into an area for supportive housing, integrative health care, and other services.

Baker-Polito Administration Announces $2 5 Million in Urban Agenda Grants – East Boston Times-Free Press

The state last week announced a total of $2.5 million in Urban Agenda grants to support 30 projects in 23 communities, including Chelsea and Revere. Launched by the Baker-Polito Administration in 2015, the Urban Agenda Grant Program promotes economic vitality in urban neighborhoods by fostering partnerships that capitalize on unique local assets and community-driven responses to specific challenges. Urban Agenda grants are competitive one-year awards that offer these partnerships flexible funding to implement programming and projects based on creative, collaborative work models to support economic progress in urban communities. To address the unique challenges created by the unprecedented and far-reaching impact of the global pandemic, this year’s program primarily sought proposals that intended to develop or implement COVID-19 economic recovery strategies.

Friends of Blessed Sacrament release public statement, petition to preserve the church for community use – Jamaica Plain Gazette

The Friends of Blessed Sacrament/Amigos de Blessed Sacrament put out a public statement on February 15 to lay out requests to future developers of the Blessed Sacrament church, as it is now being sold by the Hyde Square Task Force (HSTF) for $2.5 million, after no development partner was found to make necessary repairs to the church building and make it usable for the community.  The Friends of Blessed Sacrament “represent the voices of hundreds of residents, small business owners, former parishioners, youth advocates, artists, and community leaders in Jamaica Plain and the City of Boston,” the group said in their statement. 

ZBA approves JPNDC affordable senior housing project – Jamaica Plain Gazette

The Zoning Board of Appeal (ZBA) on February 23 approved the 39 unit affordable senior housing project at 3371-3375 Washington St., as well as approved as final arbiter the project at 35 Brookley Road after previously approving it in July of last year “subject to design review by BPDA with attention to reducing density and massing and for compliance with the rear yard setback requirement,” according to the ZBA. 3371-3375 WASHINGTON ST. The proposal at 3371 Washington St has been presented to the JP community on several different occasions, and consists of 39 affordable units of senior housing as well as a space for El Embajador restaurant to operate, as it currently operates out of this location. The project is being developed by the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Corporation (JPNDC) and New Atlantic Development.
