Nearly 40 supermarkets across Massachusetts are partnering with the state to deliver COVID-19 vaccine at their pharmacies starting next week.
Wegmans is one of the many supermarkets participating in the new vaccine rollout effort. The supermarket chain will also be working with officials in New York and Pennsylvania to administer vaccines.
The state will also partner will grocery chains Big Y, Price Chopper, Stop & Shop and Hannaford to provide approximately vaccination sites starting Monday, according to the Baker administration said.
The ramp up of vaccination sites comes after the discovery of nearly 2,000 spoiled coronavirus vaccine doses at the Jamaica Plain VA Medical Center in Boston after the refrigerator they were being stored in was accidentally unplugged.

BOSTON (Tribune News Service) The Jamaica Plain VA Medical Center was forced to dispose of nearly 2,000 doses of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine after the plug to the freezer was accidentally loosened by a cleaning contractor, the Boston Globe reported. Staff at the VA Boston facility noticed the issue on Tuesday, the report said. Moderna and Pfizer’s vaccine must be kept at extremely old temperatures. With the freezer unplugged, 1,900 doses were thrown away, the report said.
WASHINGTON New research finds full doses of blood thinners such as heparin can help moderately ill hospitalized COVID-19 patients avoid the need for breathing machines or other organ support.
The preliminary results come from three large, international studies testing various coronavirus treatments and haven’t yet been published. The U.S. National Institutes of Health and other sponsors released the results Friday to help doctors decide on appropriate care.
Nearly all hospitalized COVID-19 patients currently get low doses of a blood thinner to try to prevent clots from forming.
The new results show that “when we give higher doses of blood thinners to patients who are not already critically ill, there is a significant benefit in preventing them from getting sicker,” said Dr. Matthew Neal, a trauma surgeon at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and one study leader.
