A former Wellington mayor says the Invercargill City Council's push for councillors to avoid certain subjects in the media "sounds like North Korea or China".
'Flippant', 'opaque' and 'lacking mayoral leadership'. Wellington Mayor Andy Foster is not winning any popularity contests with some of his city councillors, as they grow increasingly frustrated with his management style.
But others maintain he's the best person for the job, while he himself has cast criticism against him as 'pure politicking'.

In the 200-year history of Providence, Rhode Island s Congdon Street Baptist Church, Reverend Justin Lester understands how important the chapter being written right now.

A huge fountain erupted in Aro Valley sending torrents of water down Aro Street, as Wellington s pipe network s woes continue.
OPINION: Half a lifetime ago I moved to Wellington. Entranced by the energy, I fell in love with the city. After 20 years of calling it home but watching the capital’s problems pile up, I’ve made the move to Dunedin. The reason my family moved was part pull, but also part push. Wellington’s not working. The council didn’t have to waste $12,000 on an international consultant to be told describing yourself as cool, wasn t cool and that the city was ”a bit aimless, looking for purpose”.There is a pervasive sense of malaise and a growing list of complaints – unaffordable housing, a broken water network, creaking public transport, a tired CBD and a nightlife quarter beset by violence and sexual assault. Add in a divided council with less than a third of residents satisfied with the way it makes decisions and you have capital problems.

Wellington’s former mayors are calling the capital’s increasingly common sewage spills “embarrassing” and “a gross failure,” pointing to decades of under-investment in infrastructure and managerial incompetence. But they do not take any responsibility for that under-investment, and nor does current mayor Andy Foster, who has been on the council since 1992. Former mayors Justin Lester and Celia Wade-Brown, who led the city between 2010 and 2019, claimed councillors had been misled about the extent of the problems with the ageing pipe network.
