Kerala CM optimistic of solution
An indefinite stir by the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church demanding the Kerala government to frame a law to guarantee justice for the Jacobite faction of the Malankara Church began here on Friday.
Metropolitan Trustee Joseph Mar Gregorios Metropolitan, who inaugurated the agitation in front of the Secretariat, said the court verdict had failed to resolve the feud between the Orthodox and Jacobite factions and legislation was the only solution.
Churches in legal tangle
The Jacobite Syrian Christian Church has temporarily lost possession of 52 churches, and more than 600 churches are entangled in court cases.
KOCHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday held discussions with representatives of the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church in New Delhi in a bid to resolve the century old dispute between two Kerala based Syrian church groups. He met three senior priests of the church at his office, a day after discussions with representatives of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church there.
The two church groups issued separate statements on Tuesday, hailing their meeting with Modi as cordial and fruitful .
The feud between the two factions intensified following implementation of a 2017 Supreme Court order, granting the Orthodox faction possession of over 1,000 churches and properties attached to them.

NEW DELHI: The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church on Monday said it had a cordial meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has initiated discussions with two rival Kerala-based Syrian church groups to end their bitter battle for possession of over 1000 churches and their properties. Modi is expected to hold discussions with representatives of the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church faction on Tuesday over the issue, sources said.
Mizoram Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai, who has held several discussions with top priests of both Orthodox and Jacobite factions on the matter, arranged their separate meetings with the prime minister, they said. After three Bishops of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church met Modi in New Delhi today, a church spokesperson said here they have informed the prime minister about the 2017 Supreme Court order, granting them possession of over 1000 churches and the properties attached to them.

A high-level delegation from the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church apprised Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday about the “gross denial of justice and trampling of democratic rights” of their members.
“Parishioners belonging to the Jacobite faction are being alienated from their own churches by members of the rival Orthodox faction,” said Kuriakose Mor Theophilos Metropolitan, spokesman of the Jacobite Church, who was part of the delegation.
