When Sara King and her husband, Tyler, started Bird & Co three years ago, they went into their new business with a passion for giving back to their local community. If we couldn’t give back, I don’t even know that we would do it, Sarah King said. That’s the best part about it. Over the years, they ve run backpack drives, donated clothes to students and raised money for programs at Novant Health, like providing women with funds to get mammograms.Their latest initiative is the Give Back Graphic Tee. Each month, the Kings and their employees put their heads together to come up with an eye-catching design and witty sayings for a special t-shirt. In their limited month-long run, all the profits from the shirts go to a local charity. We ve reached all different types of people, said Sara King. Children, elders, women. We wanted to do animals this month. Driving to work, Sara King said she sees dogs out in the cold especially during the winter months. Already having a rela
Justin Bailey has been a runner his whole life, but he has only picked up longer distances in the last few years. He said he likes to get them done early in the morning to start his day on the right foot. Bailey started his longest run yet early Saturday morning with 43 miles ahead of him. As far as races go, Bailey has several marathons under his belt and a few ultra-marathons, but his longest stretch was 34 miles. He s relying on his friends, including his F3 running buddies, to accompany him along the way. More than 50 people signed up ahead of time to tackle stretches of his journey, but it s Bailey who will have to go the full distance at the end of the day.Another motivation factor is that with every l
As North Carolina continues to break its own COVID-19 records, hospital workers have been feeling extra pressure to keep up with the growing number of patients. Recognizing it needed help, Caldwell Memorial Hospital, along with several other nearby facilities, reached out to the Christian organization Samaritan s Purse. Throughout the pandemic, the international relief group set up emergency field hospitals in Italy, New York City and the Bahamas. This is only the second field hospital that the group has set up in the U.S. The group announced a third will be set up in California on Sunday night.Medical Director Erin Holzhauer said with each unit they set up, their disaster specialists have learned more about fighting the virus and how to better take care of their patients. These patients are going to receive top-level care, Holzhauer said, standing outside the newly set-up tents in Lenoir. We re hoping that we got here just in time to be able to relieve some pressure and keep
