Jackson woman’s harsh sentence for involuntary manslaughter must be changed or justified, higher court rules Updated Dec 23, 2020; Facebook Share JACKSON, MI – The harsh sentence given to a Jackson woman convicted of involuntary manslaughter needs to be changed or justified, according to an order from the Michigan Court of Appeals. Daisha Cooper, 32, was convicted Jan. 14, 2019, by a jury for involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of her boyfriend Ben Johnson on May 8, 2016. The jury was hung on a charge of second-degree murder and agreed on involuntary manslaughter. This was Cooper’s second trial, after the first jury found Cooper not guilty of first-degree murder and guilty of one count of felony firearms. The case was tried again for second-degree murder.

The number of major criminal and civil trials has dropped during the pandemic. The Multnomah County District Attorney s Office announced the conviction of two teenagers on weapons charges in early December. Both were charged in connection with a May 2019 shooting that sent bullets into homes, businesses and vehicles. Both defendants were convicted of unlawful use of a firearm, a Class C felony punishable by up to five years in prison. Although the number of shootings in Portland is on track to double this year, the DA s office said this was only the third felony trial to be held in the county since March and the only one involving a shooting.

Imprisoned nearly 40 years, a U S man is freed after a witness recanted her story

  Walter Forbes was a young college student in 1982 when he stepped between two groups fighting outside a bar in his small Michigan town. One of the men, Dennis Hall, retaliated the next day, shooting Forbes four times. Soon afterward, Hall died in an apparent arson fire, and Forbes was sentenced to life in prison without parole, according to court documents. Now, in a complex story first reported by the Detroit Free Press, Forbes has walked free after a key witness recanted her testimony. While on bail for the shooting, Hall died in a fire at his apartment in Jackson. His fiancee was able to escape with their young daughter.
