Police and paramedics were dispatched to the intersection of E McAndrews and Bonita Avenue just before 2 p.m. MPD said that two off-duty nurses were first on the scene and began live-saving efforts on a driver who was ejected from his pickup, suffering severe injuries.

Since then, he has remained in custody between the Jackson County Jail and the Oregon State Hospital, undergoing mental health assessments.
