SUMMIT TWP., MI – A fire destroyed a Summit Township home early Friday morning.
The Summit Township Fire Department responded to the 300 block of Woodland Avenue at 3:33 a.m., March 5, Capt. Scott Stoker said. A Jackson County sheriff’s deputy on another call saw the fire and reported it, he said.
Flames were coming out the east side of the one-story house when crews arrived on scene, Stoker said.
No one was home at the time of the fire, and no one was injured during the three and a half hours crews were on scene, Stoker said.
Grand River Brewery severely damaged after car crashes through wall

JACKSON, MI – A speeding driver lost control and crashed into the Grand River Brewery in downtown Jackson Thursday night, causing severe damage to the building.
The driver of a silver Mercury was going west on Louis Glick Highway when the vehicle crossed the east lane, hit a curb and went through an outer wall of the brewery and restaurant at 117 W. Louis Glick Highway, at 9:59 p.m., Feb. 11, Jackson Police Lt. Adam Williams said.
The driver of the vehicle left skid marks on the road heading west, Williams said, adding speed is a factor in the crash.

JACKSON COUNTY, MI – A man shot himself in the leg while at work in Grass Lake Township Monday morning, police said.
The 33-year-old Summit Township man was working at 11:37 a.m., Feb. 8, in the 11000 block of Morrissey Road when he was shot in the leg, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said.
He is a concealed pistol license holder and was carrying a concealed gun, which is registered to him, when it got caught on a machine and fired, police said.
The man was taken to Henry Ford Allegiance Health by ambulance, where he was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.
Mini Polar Plunge helps police officers raise money for Special Olympics

A “Mini Polar Plunge” on Saturday, Feb. 6 helped Jackson police officers, along with family and friends, raise money for Special Olympics Michigan.
About 15 plungers hit the frigid water of Farwell Lake in southern Jackson County under the watchful eye of Hanover and Liberty Township firefighters with a Jackson Community Ambulance crew on standby. A larger Polar Plunge, usually held at Clark Lake in late January, was canceled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Trent Marcum, Jackson Police Department liaison officer for the Special Olympics, said $2,172 was raised for the cause.
