Only one item on new business: a unanimous vote on a new tornado siren.
It’s a 50/50 split of $26,000 between the City of Jackson and Madison County.
“The airport, library, and a couple of other things are shared: equal county and city. So this is costing the city $13,600, give or take,” said City of Jackson Mayor Scott Conger.
The siren will be installed in the Adair community.
EMA Director Jason Moore says it’s one of two new sirens being installed in northwest Madison County.
The other is a replacement in the Wyndchase neighborhood due to a lightning strike.
“’I’m giving you my baby,’” a parent once told Penny Schwinn, then a principal.
The Tennessee Department of Education Commissioner didn’t quite understand what she meant until Schwinn became a mother when she adopted her first child – something that shapes her decisions as a commissioner.
“’I love this baby, but I cannot give her what she deserves; I cannot give her what she needs, so I’m giving you my baby,’” the birth mother told Schwinn. “In that moment, becoming a new mom and hearing that responsibility… for the first time, it clicked for me like it never has before: parents give us their babies every single day, and there is a responsibility that we have in education to care for and nurture. There is a love that comes with that kind of work.

Vaccinations to be administered at on-site and off-site locations in 18 states
Over the next few weeks, Walmart plans to hold COVID-19 vaccination events at 43 locations in 18 states, particularly in communities with limited access to health care services.
Walmart said on Thursday that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is allocating vaccine doses for the project, launched in partnership with local community leaders and nonprofit organizations.
Coronavirus vaccine administration sites will include drive-thru locations in store parking lots, in-store areas and off-site venues, the Bentonville, Ark.-based retail giant said. The off-site locations will be operated in tandem with community groups, such as Casa del Inmigrante/Immigrant Home Foundation, a nonprofit serving immigrants in Las Vegas; the Indianapolis Urban League in Indiana; and the Jackson Housing Authority and Wishrock at the Golden Key Envision Center in Jackson, Miss.
