The Mental Health Commission has said it has reached agreement with the HSE that immediate steps will be taken to improve services at the Carraig Mór psychiatric intensive care unit at Shanakiel in Cork.
Carraig Mór is an 18-bed facility. Its patients are described as vulnerable, with some presenting a risk to themselves and others.
At a district court hearing in Cork a fortnight ago, the Mental Health Commission said Carraig Mór was not fit for purpose .
Counsel for the MHC, Donal O Sullivan, told the court: I m not saying the building is falling down, but what it s used for is not appropriate and suitable.
