Nebraska senator proposes voter ID, moving state back to winner-take-all

CHRIS DUNKER Lincoln Journal Star Lawmakers will once again consider a proposal requiring Nebraskans to show photo identification before voting, as well as a bill that would do away with the state s unique method of awarding Electoral College votes. In a news release Thursday, Sen. Julie Slama of Peru called both common-sense measures that would improve Nebraska s election laws and security. Slama said her constitutional amendment (LR3CA) requiring voters to bring their photo to the polls â a proposal that has been introduced nine out of the past 10 years â would combat voter fraud and preserve public confidence in the legitimacy of the elected government.

After Nebraska held its first-ever election with more people voting early than on Election Day, an outside group that monitors the stateâs elections said voting by mail, voting early in person and voting at the polls went âremarkably well.â Civic Nebraska found mostly typical hiccups, including Election Day voters visiting the wrong polling places. The groupâs post-election report mentions, for instance, that some voters in the Omaha suburbs got confused by which of several nearby polling places was theirs. The group enlisted observers across Nebraska and said they witnessed few problems and saw no voter intimidation. One exception: some national calls telling people to stay safe, stay home and donât vote.
