Report Says NYS Nursing Homes Highly Underreporting COVID Deaths

Report Says NYS Nursing Homes Highly Underreporting COVID Deaths A new report from NY State Attorney General Letitia James reveals that data from The New York Department of Health shows (DOH) COVID-19 related deaths reported was well below actual numbers, by as much as 50% lower. The investigations by James office also found that nursing homes’ lack of compliance with infection control protocols put residents at increased risk of harm, and facilities that had lower pre-pandemic staffing ratings had higher COVID-19 fatality rates. Preliminary data obtained by the AG suggests that many nursing home residents died from COVID-19 in hospitals after being transferred from their nursing homes, which is not reflected in Health Dept. s published total nursing home death data. Preliminary data also reflects apparent underreporting to The DOH by some nursing homes of resident deaths occurring in nursing homes.

The legislation in question, Bill A416, was sponsored by State Assemblyman Noah Perry. Bill A416 would allow the governor or his or her delegates to detain a person who poses an “imminent and significant threat to public health” in a medical facility or some other facility designated by the governor. The bill did not actually mention COVID-19 nor cite specific criteria or locations for the detentions.

Several State Officials React To Cuomo 2021 Budget Address

Several State Officials React To Cuomo 2021 Budget Address In the midst of a Pandemic New York State still had to put forth a budget that would somehow address the shortfalls brought about before and after COVID-19 struck. Cuomo laid out two separate budgets for residents of the state. On one hand we could have a budget that advances aggressive post COVID-19 Reconstruction or one that would be of a great detriment, should the Federal Government not get involved. All told, Cuomo feels that there needs to be at least $15 Billion in aid given by the Feds. Several local leaders and state organizations have reacted to Cuomo s address which took place on Tuesday. One of those organizations that spoke out is a union that isn t always in lock-step with the Governor. The New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) released a statement shortly after Cuomo s address. NYSUT sided with Cuomo in that the possibility of two different budgets is a wake up call to Washington. NYSUT reps stated,
