Armyworms on the attack in western Arkansas pastures

Armyworms on the attack in western Arkansas pastures Most years, when the region saw an intense week of snow like what happened in 2021, armyworms wouldn t be an issue. Not this summer, though. Author: 5NEWS Web Staff Updated: 6:53 PM CDT July 16, 2021 FORT SMITH, Ark. Cattle producers in Arkansas are being encouraged to scout their fields after many fall armyworms were spotted. February s deep freeze seems to have had little impact on the invasive pest.  The University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture says that armyworms search out tender plants to eat and can turn a lush pasture barren in nearly a day.

high number of fall armyworms in Arkansas appearing in pastures, lawns

Mary Hightower University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture The fall armyworms surging through Arkansas pastures and lawns apparently don’t understand the concept of a killing freeze. Like the old saw, this army travels on its stomach and searches for tender plants to eat. The armyworms can often render a lush pasture nearly barren in a day. “Right now, we’re seeing populations well above treatment thresholds in southern, southwestern and western Arkansas from Mena into Fort Smith and Van Buren,” said Kelly Loftin, extension entomologist for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. “We’re seeing reports in north-central regions like Cleburne County over into Greene County.”

Portland named one of top 10 places to live in United States

Read Article The city of Portland has been named one of the top 10 places to live in the United States. U.S. News & World Report, a respected and well-known media company, chose Maine’s largest city as the eighth-best place to live in the country. It also ranked Portland as the safest place to live in the U.S. “This a great reminder to those of us who already live here: we are so lucky to call Portland home,” Portland Mayor Kate Snyder said in a statement Wednesday. “Our community is close-knit, engaged, and always looking for ways to energize and improve our city. I encourage Portland residents to take pride in this national recognition, and for others to consider making Portland their next stop for either a visit or a permanent change of scenery.”
