One of the prisoners charged in the March 23 killings of two Anamosa State Penitentiary workers has a history of disciplinary problems.
Those problems include a previous assault against a prison staff member and allegations he had once planned an escape attempt from a county jail, records show.
That history raises questions about why the prisoner, Michael Dutcher, 28, was on a prison work detail and was able to access tools, according to a corrections expert interviewed by the Register. Dutcher and another inmate, Thomas Woodard, 39, allegedly used hammers to beat to death corrections officer Robert McFarland and nurse Lorena Schulte in the prison’s infirmary, prison officials have said.

Facebook posts claim that recently signed New York state legislation legalizing recreational marijuana includes a back-door policy barring cannabis users from purchasing guns. This is false; there was no mention of firearms in the bill, and although federal law prohibits marijuana use by gun owners, experts say this restriction is unlikely to impact firearm owners in the state.
“Hey NYers…..don’t get too excited about pot being legalized. It’s a trick…” warns an April 2, 2021 Facebook post later shared as a screenshot.
“If you purchase pot using your NYS ID, you will be disqualified from purchasing firearms. Little back door gun control policy included in the bill,” it claims.
