December 10, 2020 at 9:26 PM EDISON, NJ Council President Joyce Ship-Freeman has broken several barriers since she was sworn in as the Edison Township Council President on Jan. 6, 2020. She is the first African American, and currently, the only woman on the council. Ship-Freeman also became council president her first time ever being on the council. Ship-Freeman, 65, is a lifelong Edison resident. Over the years, she has contributed to the community as a: state commissioner for Amistad curriculum, New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) policy board member, Edison public library trustee, YMCA trustee, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) member, reading specialist/mentor, and volunteer for sports and committees.
