WASHINGTON In the Texas-size stare-down between state Democratic legislators and Gov. Greg Abbott over voting rights, many observers believe the Democrats will be the ones to blink first.
The more than 50 state House Democrats made a political bet when they flew to Washington, D.C., earlier this week, hinging their hopes on Congress to pass federal voting rights legislation while stalling the state Legislature back in Austin, part of an effort to halt a restrictive voting measure.

One year ago, legendary congressman and civil rights activist John Lewis passed away.
There were a number of rallies -and ceremonies across the Bay Area and the rest of the country to honor his legacy.
One of the vigils took place at Corte Madera.
“It s really hard to believe that John Lewis is not with us anymore. He was an inspiration for so many people, he s a titan of voting rights and civil rights,” said Susan Bolle, event organizer
It s one of more than 100 across the country organized to pressure congress to pass the John Lewis voting rights act.

“Remembering and celebrating John Lewis today is important,” said Rep. Cori Bush. “Abolishing the filibuster to secure the right to vote for everyone is how we must protect his legacy.”

On the one-year anniversary of his death, progressives on Saturday made the case that the best way to honor the legacy of former Congressman and civil rights icon John Lewis, who risked his life to contribute to the struggle for Black Americans’ right to vote and live with dignity, is to repeal the Senate filibuster and pass bills aimed at strengthening U.S. democracy.
