Steve Vockrodt, The Kansas City Star Dec. 24 An email chain that ultimately led to a perjury charge against Shawnee Mayor Michelle Distler started with an activist who was upset about her refusal to break a tie for the city council president. Mike Egan, a former Shawnee resident who now lives in Missouri s Ozarks but still uses email to regularly chime in on Shawnee civic affairs, sent a March 5 email to Distler, four council members and others who keep tabs on City Hall. Egan s email, obtained by The Star through a Kansas Open Records Act request, blasted Distler for not breaking a 4-4 tie to choose a council president in January. Distler said at the time that she didn t want to insert herself in the vote, fearing it would make the Council appear even more divisive.

Jesse James Flaugher currently is being held on a $1 million bond following the Dec. 15 shooting in which the officer, who has not been named, was shot in the arm. The shooting occurred at South 39th Street and County Line Road, near the Argentine neighborhood in KCK. A KCKPD spokesperson previously said that the officer was pursuing a vehicle sought in connection to a hit-and-run incident prior to the shooting.

IMCC presents competency evaluation in IC attempted murder case

12/20/20 The findings of a court-ordered competency evaluation have been submitted in an Iowa City attempted murder case. Online records show the evaluation of 34-year-old transient Trell Grant, performed at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center at Oakdale, was submitted to Johnson County District Court on Friday. Legal proceedings in the case were suspended on December 10 th pending the evaluation, which was ordered by judge Andrew Chappell. Grant is accused of robbing and stabbing a clerk at Delimart on Lower Muscatine Road just before midnight on August 21 st. Arrest records indicate Grant entered the store, walked behind the counter and quickly and repeatedly stabbed the clerk with a knife until the clerk opened the cash register drawer. Grant then fled the scene with money from the register, leaving his bag behind.
