Retired Crookshank teacher donates her book to St Johns County schools

When she retired after 40 years of teaching, including 18 years at Crookshank Elementary School, reading specialist Joanne Marziani wanted to leave behind something special for the students. Her husband suggested she write a children’s book. Marziani wanted to write a book that would fill an unmet need. She interviewed some of her struggling readers and asked them what they would like to read about and 90% said they would choose a book about football. When she researched children’s books about the sport, Marziani found there were plenty of football books written at a third-grade reading level or higher, but there were hardly any written on a first- or second-grade level.

Parents call St Johns County schools dress code sexist, seek change

A growing number of students and parents are putting pressure on the St. Johns County School District to revise its dress code, calling it unfair and sexist following a March 26 building-wide inspection at Bartram Trail High School that resulted in 31 students cited for violation of the policy on that day, all female. The school district is accepting parental input on the issue now through April 30 in its annual look at dress code policy as part of the larger student code of conduct review it does annually. According to Bartram Trail students and parents, administrators and other school staff lined up in hallways on March 26 to monitor the wardrobe of students, with girls being asked to hold their hands over their heads to check if shirts exposed any skin on their midriff area.
