BARRIE, ONT. The Simcoe Muskoka health unit reports 44 COVID-19 cases Tuesday. Dr. Charles Gardner, Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) medical officer of health, says the newly added cases could set a record this week. I think we re on track this week to having the highest number of cases we ve ever had, he said Tuesday afternoon. Since last week s update, Gardner said three Simcoe County residents have died with the virus. One is a woman in her 80s, and one is a man in his 80s, both passed away at Georgian Bay General Hospital, and one is a man between the ages of 45 and 64 who passed away at Toronto Western Hospital, he said.

The health unit lists 17 people in the hospital with the virus and 448 active cases across Simcoe Muskoka. Four people died with COVID-19 this week, including two at Georgian Bay General Hospital, where staff are battling a stubborn outbreak of the virus. The recent virus-related deaths bring the region s death toll to 58. Along with the Midland hospital, there are nine other institutional outbreaks listed by the health unit. Eight of those are in seniors homes, while one is at the Central North Correctional Centre in Penetanguishene.

On Monday, a man in his 80s died at Stevenson Memorial Hospital in Alliston and on Thursday, a woman, 65 to 79, died at Georgian Bay General Hospital in Midland. The health unit listed 52 new cases, including 17 people who are in the hospital. There are currently 401 active COVID-19 cases across Simcoe Muskoka, with most residing in Barrie, Bradford West Gwillimbury, New Tecumseth, Essa, and Innisfil.

According to Gardner, 13 people are in the hospital with the virus, all in Simcoe County, five of whom are in the intensive care unit.

The health unit also listed outbreaks at seven facilities, including at Georgian Bay General Hospital in Midland. The remaining facilities are seniors homes. Residents of long-term care and retirement homes have been the hardest hit by COVID-19, with one-third of cases succumbing to the illness, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit states.
