(Shutterstock / ilikeyellow) GEORGIA Legislation protecting Georgians safety and their pocketbooks are among the new laws taking effect on Jan. 1, 2021. Two opposing laws were born out of 2020 s Black Lives Matter movement. Spurred by the shooting of Ahmaud Arbery, Georgia lawmakers in June finally passed a hate crimes law. House Bill 426, authored mainly by Rep. Chuck Efstration of Dacula, imposes extra penalties for crimes motivated by bias against a victim s race, gender or sexual orientation, among other things. This bipartisan legislation is a powerful step forward. It s a sign of progress, Gov. Brian Kemp said in a press conference as reported at the time by USA Today. Frankly, it s the silver lining in these difficult times. Georgia had been one of the few states yet to enact hate crimes legislation.

Mystery solved: new study shows link between hot and dry weather and air quality in Korea

E-Mail IMAGE: Air pollution from human activities and dry, sunny weather combine to increase surface ozone concentrations, and ozone emissions are very harmful to health view more  Credit: Daniel Moqvist on Unsplash While ozone in the stratosphere acts as barrier that protects the Earth from ultraviolet radiation, ground-level (or tropospheric) ozone is a dangerous trace gas that can cause serious health problems. This ozone is the result of photochemical reactions between nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds, which are two major air pollutants. Over the past decades, East Asia has witnessed a marked degradation of air quality, especially so in terms of ground-level ozone, that is consistent with human activity. However, in Korea, the specific reasons behind increase in ozone levels during warm seasons remain a mystery among atmospheric scientists.
