The statement comes amid increased scrutiny over how top Southern Baptist officials responded to the sex-abuse crisis within the conservative network of churches.
In the weeks leading up to the annual meeting, leaked letters from Russell Moore, the former president of the convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, alleged that the executive committee, which handles denomination business when the convention isn t in session, mishandled sexual abuse claims and mistreated abuse victims.
As a result, the executive committee hired an outside firm to investigate the allegations but many Southern Baptists say the inquiry should expand. The panel on Monday declined to do so but several pastors are pushing ahead and hope to take the matter before the full convention on today.
