A celebration of George Floyd s life is being held in downtown Minneapolis on Tuesday, a year after his death at the hands of police sparked worldwide protests and a reckoning on racial justice. The celebration, organized by the George Floyd Memorial Foundation, caps days of marches, rallies and panel discussions to memorialize Floyd and call for federal action on police reform.
The event will celebrate the life and legacy of George Floyd through black culture, art, history and support of local businesses, according to a release from the foundation, founded by Floyd s sister Bridgett Floyd. It will feature musical performances, games and guest appearances.
A lot has happened. But has anything changed?
When it comes to ideas on police reform, the short answer is yes. The long answer is more complicated.
The most common mistake people make in analyzing the Black Lives Matter movement is assuming it is a “Black” movement.
No. Nationally, it is a diverse movement. George Floyd’s graphic murder, captured on a teenage girl’s mobile phone, was felt on some level even by people who are not African American.
Few of us could stand to see it, whether we were Black, white, or any other race or ethnicity. Old or young. People living in big cities or in small towns.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Members of George Floyd’s family, and others who lost loved ones to police encounters, joined activists and citizens in Minneapolis on Sunday for a march that was one of several events planned nationwide to mark the one-year anniversary of Floyd’s death.
Hundreds of people gathered for the rally in front of the courthouse in downtown Minneapolis where the Chauvin trial concluded a month ago, many carrying signs with pictures of Floyd, Philando Castile and other Black men killed by police.
Amid chants of “no justice, no peace!” and “Say his name,” Gov. Tim Walz, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter watched alongside a dozen of Floyd’s family members as speakers called for justice for families of Black men slain by police.

throughout the day at George Floyd Square, where memorials were being erected, food was being served and an open mic prepared for the afternoon. A couple hundred people in George Floyd Square, where Floyd was murdered, as the Rise and Remember memorial event is about to start, MPR News reporter Jon Collins tweeted. Lots of media from all over the place too. This is the closest thing to a block party I ve seen in a year.
