April 13 (Reuters) - W. Galen Weston, patriarch of one of Canada s wealthiest families and retail titan, has died at age 80, according to a statement by the family on Tuesday.
Weston was the third generation of his family to lead George Weston Limited, an already-prosperous retail empire founded by his grandfather, which he expanded significantly.
The family company, now run by his son, Galen Weston, owns Primark and Selfridges in the United Kingdom, as well as the Canadian grocery chain Loblaw Co Ltd, pharmacy chain Shoppers Drug Mart, and real estate company Choice Properties.

He was 80 and died at home after a long illness.
Mr Weston helped build food, retail, and real estate companies across two continents, including the Selfridges Group that includes Brown Thomas and Arnotts.
His family s retail empire also includes a majority shareholding in Associated British Foods, the owner of Primark and Penneys, which he founded with his Dublin born wife Hilary in 1969.
The family also owns the largest stake in Loblaws, which Mr Weston is credited with transforming into Canada’s largest food and pharmacy chain.
