Soros-Backed Mag Pushes for 5 New States to ‘End Whiteness’ of Government Natalie Winters, National Pulse, May 6, 2021 OpenDemocracy, a left-wing magazine funded by organizations linked to George Soros, called for granting statehood to five U.S. territories in order to “end the whiteness of Congress.” Written by Karl Widerquist, a Professor of Philosophy at Georgetown University-Qatar, the piece argues that “one of the most transformative things Democrats could do with their narrow majority in Congress would be to grant statehood to all the remaining inhabited US territories”: Washington DC, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the Mariana Islands.

Pakistani Disability Rights Activist Takes Home Prestigious Rhodes Scholarship

A Georgetown University Qatar student named Khansa Maria just made history by becoming the first woman with a disability in her entire country to win a Rhodes Trust Scholarship. The high-achieving Lahore, Pakistan, native is one of just 27 Rhodes Scholars to ever come out of her university. She will be pursuing her master’s degree at Oxford University next fall. As someone who was born blind, Khansa is ready to use her scholarship to make waves in the disability rights movement. Though she is still an undergraduate, Khansa has already made giant strides as a disability rights advocate in her role at the U.S. Embassy in Qatar. She has organized and spoken at multiple conferences focused on inclusive policy creation.

In her talk, Rania Maktabi reflects on meanings of citizenship and what ‘sustainability’ implies in a transnational context. Her main focus is how education and architecture represent fundamental venues for molding new forms of global Muslim identities – both religious and secular – which are exclusive and inclusive in intricate ways. The talk is part of the Joint Lecture Series, a joint initiative of AKU-ISMC and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture’s Education Programme; the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat and the Aga Khan Museum are also organizing partners this year.
