Scranton President Dies of ALS Complications

The Reverend Scott Pilarz, president of the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania, died this week of complications related to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, at the age of 61.
Father Pilarz announced his diagnosis in 2018. He had been slated to step down May 31, according to the Wilkes-Barre
Times Leader.
He was both the 24th and 27th president of the university, first serving from 2003 to 2011. He then returned to the position in 2018.
The university announced Father Pilarz had died Wednesday in a letter from the chair of its Board of Trustees, James M. Slattery.
“Anyone who spent time with Father Pilarz experienced his humor, compassion and genuine humanity,” Slattery wrote. “He was a person for others in every sense, devoted to a life of service that exemplifies what it means to be a Jesuit and a priest.”

Bishop William D. Byrne was ordained and installed as the 10th bishop of the Diocese of Springfield, Mass., on Dec. 14. I spoke with Bishop Byrne about his hopes for my home diocese of Springfield to which I recently returned after 12 years in the New York metropolitan area and the larger church. The interview took place over two phone calls, one on Dec. 23, the other on Jan. 21. The conversation has been edited for length and clarity.
Montgomery County COVID-19 Statistics for Feb 3
The Maryland Department of Health reported 147 new COVID-19 cases in Montgomery County Wednesday morning. The county’s cumulative case count is 59,439.
Montgomery County recorded seven new coronavirus-related fatalities Wednesday, bringing the death toll to 1,276.
As of Wednesday, 26 schools in the state are reporting COVID-19 cases, six are located in Montgomery County. They include:

Brookewood School located in Kensington reports three cases.
Georgetown Preparatory School in North Bethesda reports seven cases.
