Community groups led by Scarborough Civic Action Network interviewed candidates by Zoom and put the interviews on YouTube. Fourteen candidates took part.(Submitted by Anna Kim) The city is urging residents in Ward 22 to get out and vote in the Scarborough-Agincourt byelection on Friday despite the COVID-19 pandemic. Friday s byelection is being held to replace Jim Karygiannis, who was removed as city councillor last year due to a campaign spending violation in the 2018 municipal election. Twenty-seven candidates are running for municipal office. There are 65,793 people eligible to vote.

Voters are set to go to the polls on Friday in Scarborough-Agincourt in a byelection that was scheduled last year to replace former councillor Jim Karygiannis, who was ousted from office over campaign expenses. But on Tuesday, Premier Doug Ford declared a new state of emergency for Ontario amid soaring COVID-19 case counts which threaten to overwhelm the healthcare system. Ford also said a stay-at-home order would be in effect for the entire province as of 12:01 a.m. on Thursday. All residents aside from essential workers are being asked to stay home as much as possible and to venture out only for essential reasons such as grocery shopping and doctors appointments.

Scarborough-Agincourt byelection: Advance polls open Friday

  TORONTO Advance polls open today in a by-election being held to choose a new local councillor for Ward 22 Scarborough-Agincourt following the ouster of Jim Karygiannis. Karygiannis was removed from office halfway through his second council term over campaign expenses from the 2018 election. In council’s previous term, the area was represented by Karygiannis and former councillor Norm Kelly. Voters heading to the polls today have a wide range of choices, with 27 registered candidates and no incumbent. A diverse, fast-growing area Whoever wins will represent a diverse and fast-growing part of the city. There are 105,000 residents in the ward, according to 2016 census records. The ward was about half the size prior to 2018 when the Ford government used its power to redraw local ward boundaries in Toronto, cutting council in half.
