VANCOUVER The newest member of Victoria s city council says he hopes to be a voice for all Victorians. Victorians have said they want a change. They want a change in the way the city is run, and you know what? They re going to get it, victorious councillor-elect Stephen Andrew told CTV News Vancouver Island after watching the final votes come in Saturday night. There were nine candidates vying for the council seat vacated by Laurel Collins, who resigned to become a federal MP. Andrew took the lead from the first ballot and saw the gap between himself and his closest rival Stefanie Hardman grow throughout the night.
Unofficial results released by the city showed Andrew leading with 6,937 votes and Stefanie Hardman of Together Victoria in second place with 3,783 votes well ahead of the other nine candidates. “This is absolutely fantastic,” Andrew said, after taking a call from Hardman congratulating him on his victory. “You never know until you know. We knew we ran a strong campaign, we just didn’t really know how strong until we saw those numbers come in tonight. “It’s an overwhelming majority, and I think it’s an overwhelming referendum on the fact that Victorians want a change at the council table.”
VICTORIA Victoria’s next city councillor will be elected Saturday in a byelection many are calling more significant than most, including Ross Crockford, journalist for Focus Magazine. “It’s really going to determine the course of council in some major decisions and the nature of debate is going to be on the table,” said Crockford. While 11 candidates are vying to fill the seat vacated by Laurel Collins, who stepped down to become a federal MP, political watchers say there are two frontrunners to succeed her. One of them is Stefanie Hardman, an urban planner and the candidate representing Together Victoria, the political group to which Collins belonged.
