Jacinda Ardern has this morning described the death of Prince Philip as a hugely significant loss for New Zealand and announced a memorial to be held here after his UK funeral.
Speaking at Auckland s Mt Smart stadium for Pasifika Festival, the Prime Minister said the Government would be guided by the Queen s wishes in planning the New Zealand memorial for Prince Philip.
Ardern said she received the news overnight. It is with great sadness that we receive that news. The Duke had a strong connection to New Zealand, Ardern said.

New Zealand marks Christchurch earthquake 10th anniversary
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has gathered with hundreds of people to observe a minute s silence on the anniversary of the devastating 2011 earthquake. Flags were lowered to honor the 185 people who died.
Ardern also remembered 87 foreign victims of the quake, saying Our flags fly at half-mast for them today too
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern led a tribute to honor the Christchurch earthquake victims on Monday, marking the 10th anniversary of the disaster that claimed 185 lives.
Hundreds of people gathered at a memorial service in the South Island city, where they observed a minute s silence at 12:51 p.m., the time the 6.3 magnitude quake hit in 2011.
