There is no proof that a large influx of short-term migration to fill labour gaps, including those that come from the islands to pick fruit and vegetables each year, are contributing to increasing New Zealand’s productivity statistics – and some evidence that there are net negatives to such visa schemes.
That is the topline of a report released this morning by the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research (NZIER) called
Picking Cherries, which outlines the scant evidence available for the known impacts so far of seasonal, temporary migrant workers on the New Zealand economy, with a particular focus on horticulture.
