Oregon School Districts, Nonprofits Work To Re-Engage, Empower Youth Who Are Homeless

KLCC's Elizabeth Gabriel reports on high school graduation rates for students experiencing homelessness. Kathleen is a 22-year-old living in Eugene, Oregon. We’re not using her full name  to protect her privacy. She’s a young mother of two kids and recently started working as a peer support specialist for a local non-profit that helps youth experiencing homelessness. But Kathleen’s own journey hasn’t been easy. Her experience with homelessness in high school almost prevented her from getting her diploma.    Kathleen has experienced trauma since the age of seven when her father died after suffering from schizophrenia and depression. Her mother struggled to take care of Kathleen and her three siblings. At the age of 14, Kathleen was sexually assaulted. A year later she decided to leave home.

Letters to the editor for Friday, May 7: COVID-19, school boards and a lesson from Michigan Register-Guard A matter of trust, confidence  At the core of the wellness of any public service agency is relational health. The foundation of relational health is trust and confidence. So, when they are placed under stress, wellness is compromised. But, when trust and confidence are exemplary, stakeholders’ morale boosts. When morale is high, collaboration flourishes. When collaboration flourishes, innovation perseveres. Innovation is always critical in the education arena, but now more than ever.    While I am dedicated to supporting the 4J School District as we return to in-person instruction, I am particularly committed to paying close attention to the relational health of our district and its stakeholders. I pledge to diligently serve as an ambassador between the institution that is 4J and the people that are our stakeholders. I will proudly represent the district in the community, bringing transparency into all messaging. Conversely, I will carry the voices of the community with me into the district’s decision-making arena.
