SRINAGAR: The Sheetal Nath Mandir in Kralakhud area of downtown Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, was re-opened after 31 years on Tuesday. Temple bells rang as Basant Panchmi puja and havan were performed, suspended since militancy erupted in the erstwhile state in 1990.
Around 30 Kashmiri Pandits, both migrants and non-migrants, attended the prayers. ‘Prasad’ was also distributed among the devotees.
“We have formally re-opened the temple,” Upendra Handoo, the priest, said, recalling how the temple was closed in 1990.
Handoo said Basant Panchmi puja in Srinagar used to be performed at the Sheetal Nath Mandir where hundreds of Kashmiri Pandits congregated before militancy began.

Srinagar, Dec 17: A delegation of foreign envoys arrived in Srinagar on Wednesday and held a day-long meeting with people from different walks of life to access the ground situation in the Valley.
The 23-member delegation drove straight to Magam on Srinagar outskirts from the airport to meet the newly elected District Development Council (DDC) members.
Here they were briefed on different methods including Panchayati Raj, grievance redressal camps, Back to villages programmes, adapted by the government to listen to the people and resolve their issues at their doorsteps.
Talking to the media after the meeting, Nazir Ahmad Khan, the DDC Chairman of Budgam district said the issues of development were discussed

Mayor of Srinagar Junaid Mattu who was part of the discussion with visiting envoys also said, The foreign envoys spoke to elected representatives from all political parties. The common denominator was that all of them said that there were free and fair elections. Free and fair elections are the biggest attestation to the empowerment of democracy.
