(ABC 6 News) - Buried in the new state public safety bill is a new law. A recent Minnesota Supreme Court ruling spurred some legislators to pass it, which toughens the state laws involving sexual assault.
Back in March, the Minnesota Supreme Court ruled that if you were sexually assaulted after voluntarily drinking or taking drugs then the person who assaulted you might not be held responsible for a felony. That ruling got some public backlash. But Wednesday evening, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz signed the public safety bill changing those laws. Cause what are we here to do members? We re here to protect victims from violence. We re here to help the criminals find a different path and a different way. And find hope and healing and stop the criminal behavior. That s public safety, Marion O Neill, a Republican member of the Minnesota House, said.
