Nietes wins in comeback fight

After more than two years, Donnie Nietes is back and he is a champion again. The former four-division champion Nietes scored an impressive unanimous decision win against Pablo Carillo of Colombia to take the World Boxing Organization (WBO) International junior bantamweight title Sunday at the Caesars Palace Bluewaters in Dubai. The 38-year-old Nietes, who last fought in December 2018, proved he still packs a punch as he landed counters and uppercuts while moving away from Carillo in the 12-round bout. The three judges scored the bout 96-95, 98-92, 99-91 all in favor of Nietes, who improved his ring record to 43 wins with one defeat and five draws, while Carillo dropped to 25-8-1.

What s next for Herring, Akhmadaliev, and Nietes after weekend fights?

Photo by Francois Nel/Getty Images We had a solid weekend of championship boxing, nothing that blew the doors off on the MEGA-EVENT level or anything, but some good fights, good performances, and plenty to think about coming out of what we saw. Jamel Herring just down to the fact Frampton was too small at 130, or that Frampton is just a bit past it in general. Those are facts, I’m not hyping this as a crazy Superman win for Jamel, but he was really good in that fight. Herring (23-2, 11 KO) was sharp, smart, and worked his game plan very effectively, and the plan that Brian McIntyre and Co. came up with was right about perfect. Not only did Jamel use his superior height and reach, but he was throwing (and landing) consistent check hooks at moments they knew Frampton would have to reach to try to get inside instead of just tying up, and when they fighters did tie up, Herring was clearly determined not to let Frampton rough him up in there, and Carl definitely tried.

Results and highlights: Donnie Nietes returns with decision win

Photo by Francois Nel/Getty Images Former four-division titleholder Donnie Nietes got back in action today in Dubai, scoring a decision win over Pablo Carrillo and putting himself back into the mix at 115 lbs. Nietes (43-1-5, 23 KO) certainly had to shake some rust and didn’t look completely at his best here, and one judge did have it very close, scoring the bout 96-95 for Nietes. But the other two were wider, scoring it 98-92 and 99-91, and Bad Left Hook also had it 98-92. The 38-yearold Nietes seemed to warm to the fight in the latter stages, looking sharp and sound still in the final four rounds, while Colombia’s Carrillo (25-8-1, 16 KO) never found quite enough success, though he did have some, landing solid shots here and there.
