What More Can Be Done For Huntington s Opioid Crisis?

Originally published on May 12, 2021 4:31 pm The City of Huntington and Cabell County are in federal court, taking prescription opioid distributors to task. If the city and county win their lawsuit, that could result in a payout of tens of millions of dollars. And in theory, that money could help fix the problem. Dr. Lyn O Connell works with the City of Huntington to tackle the substance use crisis through clinical services, research and program development. She was also part of a team that produced a resiliency plan in 2020 for Huntington. The plan outlines a continuum of care her community could implement to stomp out the opioid crisis.

Recovery Support For College Students New, But Growing

Leffler: At campuses that have collegiate recovery programs, what are the typical support systems in place? Mullens: So we have had 11 schools in West Virginia out of 44 with a program. And that doesn t include specific trade schools or junior colleges. Typical supports are peer support services, recovery oriented programming. Some of our schools also offer scholarships. Leffler: What else would you like to see happen in colleges across the state? Mullens: So my dream is to see every school in our state offer collegiate recovery, and recovery support services, and to really dedicate resources to institutionalize programs. And what that means is, you know, to really commit to having these programs have a long life. We know that it takes probably five years to really get a program up and going. And most of our programs are definitely not five years old. The only one that is probably five years old is WVU. So it s a long range plan. There are two things that I would like to see a

Focus Turns to Young Adults In Race To Vaccinate West Virginians

June Leffler/ WVPB Huntington High School ran its first in-school COVID-19 vaccination clinic in April 2021. The school will continue to hold more clinics as more students opt into getting a first dose. Huntington High senior Mani Frieson sat patiently in the bleachers of his school gym before returning to class. He got his shot of the COVID-19 vaccine, and waited 15 minutes to be sure he had no adverse reactions. “I just see that s like a really, really great, great step towards a better future,” he said. Down on the gym floor, medical students were preparing more of his classmates for their shots.
