PPE supplies wax and wane, but one local company is helping counteract rising costs

Prices up Web Bostic, who works for local janitorial supply company, Croaker, in Castle Hayne, continues to witness the supply-and-demand chain wax and wane, from March and April’s panic-buying spree to leveling out in the fall. Though hand sanitizer and toilet paper seem to be back in the green, gloves and disinfectant wipes are a different story. Name brands like Lysol and Clorox continue to be sought after and in short supply, as are latex, nitrile and vinyl gloves which are widely used in healthcare and food industries. “Disposable glove prices have gone up 300% and are on allocation from the manufacturer,” Bostic relayed. “To help with the shortage, a newer type of hybrid vinyl glove has been produced by the manufacturers.”

COVID-19 vaccine in Pender County: Moderna comes to health department

“The first doses are going to go to healthcare providers that actively deal with COVID,” Moser said. Pender County submitted a list to the state for review of 307 healthcare workers who are in close contact with patients who have tested positive for COVID-19 and who want to receiving the vaccine. They will be among the first to get it. The remaining doses will be given to healthcare providers who may have been left off the initial list or who have changed their mind about receiving the vaccine. If they have extra doses, the county will begin contacting people who might have indirect contact with COVID-19 patients, including morticians and workers who clean in health settings.

TOP STORIES: For NHRMC, a year like no other

By Scott Nunn, posted Dec 18, 2020 A time of change: Officials agreed this year that New Hanover Regional Medical Center should be sold to Novant Health. (Photo by Michael Cline Spencer) With nothing less than its very future up for public debate, 2020 already was stacking up as the most momentous year for New Hanover Regional Medical Center since 1967, when seven infants became the first patients at the new county-owned hospital.     Not long after its first meeting in 2019, the 21-member Partnership Advisory Group – the special committee tasked with exploring future options and a possible sale of the county-owned health network – saw its work disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
