Peru oil and gas industry eyes rebound
Peru’s oil and gas industry is hoping for a rebound in 2021 following a year marred by the COVID-19 pandemic, violent indigenous protests and political instability.
With oil and gas fields, and the 200,000 b/d North Peruvian oil pipeline, shut down repeatedly by social conflicts and a three-month lockdown, Peru’s government is now focused on jumpstarting its economy, which is estimated to grow 10% in 2021 following a 13% contraction in 2020.
Many of the projects on track to come on line in 2021, including three copper mines and the $5 billion Talara oil refinery expansion, are expected to spur oil imports, which currently average 150,000 b/d.

LIMA (Reuters) – Peruvians will choose their next president from a record 22 candidates vying for the country’s top job in the April 2021 election, with a soccer goalkeeper leading the race over an ex president and the daughter of former strongman Alberto Fujimori.
The national elections authority said on Wednesday that applications to be included on the ballot were submitted electronically due to coronavirus restrictions.
Among the candidates are Keiko Fujimori, leader of a right-wing party in her third attempt to govern the Andean country once presided over by her father, former nationalist President Ollanta Humala, left-wing candidate Veronica Mendoza and moderate economist Julio Guzman.

Survey confirms dispersion of electoral preferences in Peru
Lima, Dec 13 (Prensa Latina) The percentage of Peruvians who do not support any of the 23 presidential candidates for the April 11, 2021, general elections, plus the undecided, exceeds by far the support of the most popular candidate, according to a private survey released on Sunday.
In the poll conducted by the Ipsos-Peru company, 18 percent of respondents said they would vote blank or spoil the ballot in the April 11 general elections. The undecided make up 10 percent for a total of 28 percent, 10 more than the candidate with the largerst preference, the neo-liberal former soccer player George Forsyth, from the Victoria Nacional party.
