Saturday’s bout will be only Alvarez’s third at super-middleweight.
Alvarez (53-1-2, 36 KOs) won a lopsided decision over countryman Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in 2017 and stopped Rocky Fielding in three rounds two years ago.
His only other bout above 160 pounds was an 11
th-round knockout over Sergey Kovalev that earned Alvarez a light-heavyweight belt. Shortly after defeating Kovalev last December, Alvarez vacated the title.
Despite his lack of super-middleweight bouts, Alvarez has shown he still carries power to the higher weight classes.
Returning to super-middleweight and with a victory Saturday, Alvarez will likely stay in the division. Alvarez can explore two possibilities: face top middleweights eager to move up or unify the 168-pound titles.
