Pedestrian hit and killed on Highway 79 in Pinson

A pedestrian was struck and killed in eastern Jefferson County Wednesday night.
Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies responded at 6:45 p.m. to Highway 79 in Pinson near the Dollar General, said sheriff’s Sgt. Joni Money. They arrived to find the victim unresponsive. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Money said according to witnesses, the victim stepped into the path of a southbound vehicle. The driver stopped and is cooperating.
The sheriff’s Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team is conducting the investigation.

FULTONDALE, AL Gov. Kay Ivey came to Jefferson County Wednesday to survey damage from Monday night s EF3 tornado that hit Fultondale and Center Point. Dozens of injuries were reported and the tornado claimed the life of a 14-year-old boy.
Ivey was able to get a complete view of the aftermath of the tornado via helicopter Wednesday morning, as she saw the damage to the homes and businesses in the community and the destruction of Fultondale High School.
Ivey said state leaders are working with Jefferson County leaders on how to help the 650 displaced students and where and how they will attend school in the meantime.

WAUKEENAH, Fla. (WTXL) â Two people are in serious condition after a car accident in Jefferson County Wednesday morning.
At about 9:23 a.m. a driver and passenger were driving west on U.S. Highway 27 towards Tallahassee when they approached the County Road 259 intersection, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.
As they approached the one-light intersection in the unincorporated town of Wauneekah, a second driver coming from the southern part of the intersection crossed the first set of lanes and tried turning into the westbound lanes.

Intensive care units in the Birmingham area are reaching their breaking point, with just 13 total ICU beds available in Jefferson County Wednesday morning, according to the Jefferson County Department of Health.
JCDH said the county’s hospitals had just six ICU beds available for non-COVID patients and seven ICU beds available for COVID patients, pushing both kinds of ICUs to the limit.
