Board of education approves supplemental school year requests for JCPS students © Provided by WLWT Cincinnati School The Jefferson County Board of Education will allow students in the state s largest district to redo a school year under an effort by lawmakers to alleviate some of the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. On Tuesday, the school board unanimously approved supplemental school year requests that were made possible under Senate Bill 128.Sign up for our Newsletters Gov. Andy Beshear signed the measure into law in March and school districts had until the end of May to decide their process for accepting requests. Senate Bill 128 gives any K-12 student the option to repeat the school year or a specific class because of the pandemic.

Graduates of the new Louisville Teacher Residency program signed their first contracts to teach in Jefferson County Public Schools Monday. JCPS said 28 students received their Master of the Arts in Teaching degree after finishing the program. Of the 28 graduates, 21 are teachers of color. The program was started as a collaboration between JCPS and the University of Louisville to recruit and train more teachers of color for JCPS schools. Students of color make up around 60% of JCPS enrollment.

ELMHURST, IL Two weeks ago, Elmhurst School District 205 teachers approved a new union contract, according to the district. But the district is keeping the document under wraps until after the school board approves it, as it is expected to do Tuesday night. The new agreement will be available for the public after it is approved by both parties, interim Superintendent Linda Yonke said in an email Tuesday morning. Such secrecy is a tradition among Illinois school districts. It means taxpayers have no opportunity to examine union agreements and weigh in on them beforehand. Teachers salaries and benefits take up a big chunk of any school district s budget.
