Here is a look at the good, the bad and the ugly of a historic year. Coronavirus pandemic impacts lives, changes way of living for many ATLANTA The coronavirus pandemic was responsible for nearly 80 million reported illnesses worldwide in December 2020. But, the illness, named COVID-19 by the World Health Organization (WHO), actually began in 2019. Health experts first identified the virus in Wuhan, China. Although many people reported little to no symptoms, some have reported severe illness. Around 1.72 deaths have been attributed to coronavirus. A person can remain infectious for up to two weeks after catching COVID-19.

(WBRC) - Police have charged a 29-year-old man with killing his mother in Irondale. Patrick Hugh Blanpied has been charged with murder in the death of his mother, Lea Anne Grant Blanpied. Officers responded to a 911 call from a residence in the 700 block of Meadows Drive in Irondale at 1:12 a.m. Monday. Arriving officers found a 62-year-old woman dead at the residence.

Police responded to a 911 call at 1:12 a.m. to a home in the 700 block of Meadows Drive, said Sgt. Michael Mangina. Once on the scene at the apartment complex, they found the 62-year-old victim unresponsive. She was pronounced dead on the scene. A 29-year-old male – who police say was the person who called 911 – was taken into custody with charges pending. Authorities have not said how the woman was killed or the suspect’s relationship to the victim.

Facebook Share No criminal charges will be filed in a November shooting in Birmingham that left two people dead. The suspect who initiated the dispute, police said Monday, was killed in the shooting. The man who shot him did so in self-defense. When they arrived, they found an unresponsive 40-year-old Derick Williams outside of the apartment. He was pronounced dead on the sidewalk. Inside the apartment, 65-year-old Lorretta Frazier was also found dead. Two others – a male and a female – were taken to UAB Hospital. They survived their injuries.

Sign Up for Free to View The charges against a former Alabama middle school teacher and military veteran were upgraded from manslaughter to capital murder in connection to the death of an 11-year-old boy who was shot dead during a hunting trip in May. Joshua Stewart Burks, 36, of Mobile, Alabama, shot and killed 11-year-old Troy Ellis on May 1 and injured Ellis’ father, local football coach Obed Ellis, who was treated at the scene and survived, according to local police. They were all part of a small party that went into the woods that Friday to hunt turkey, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said at the time.
