Remembering the Holocaust Special to The Oak Ridger The city of Oak Ridge has proclaimed this coming Sunday, April 11, as Holocaust Remembrance Day for 2021.    The Jewish Congregation of Oak Ridge (JCOR) and the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church (ORUUC) have partnered together to present the annual Holocaust Remembrance Program. It will be held virtually on Sunday, April 11, from 7 to 8 p.m.    There will be a candle lighting ceremony, readings, prayers and music by singer-songwriter, Chuck Brodsky.  “We encourage attendees from all over the country to participate,” a news release stated.   Mira Kimmelman, a local Holocaust survivor who died April 17, 2019, initiated the Holocaust Remembrance Program many years ago. Mira is the author of “Echoes From the Holocaust: A Memoir” (1997) and “Life beyond the Holocaust: Memories & Realities” (2005). She spent many years lecturing to various community groups and classes. 

Children s Museum of Oak Ridge to host Celebration of the Young Child

Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge to host Celebration of the Young Child Special to The Oak Ridger The Children’s Museum is still open on a part-time basis because of the pandemic. The Museum’s schedule is Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m, and Sunday from 1 until 4 p.m.   For everyone’s safety, staff and volunteers in public areas of the Museum wear masks, and the Museum is vigilant about cleaning and visitor safety protocols. Museum visitors are expected to practice social distancing, and visitors ages five and older are required to wear a mask. Masks are optional for children ages three through four. Masks are not required for children younger than three. Visitors’ temperatures are checked upon arrival and a series of health questions are asked. 

A 10-year-old boy was struck by a vehicle Thursday, April 1, near Jefferson Middle School

A 10-year-old boy was struck by a vehicle Thursday, April 1, near Jefferson Middle School. According to information from the city of Oak Ridge,  a vehicle struck the boy, a pedestrian, on Fairbanks Road north of Dayton Road near JMS. Witnesses reportedly stated the boy darted across the road into the path of the striking vehicle. He was taken to a local hospital by ambulance for treatment of possible injuries. No charges will be filed against the driver of the vehicle, according to the city. No other information on the identities of the boy or driver were given by the city.

Temperature checks halted at Oak Ridge Schools

Temperature checks halted at Oak Ridge Schools Oakridger Students, teachers and visitors to Oak Ridge Schools and all of its buildings aren t getting temperature checks as they enter the schools and other buildings any longer. Jefferson Middle School recently tweeted that the change in policy began Monday, April 5. Bruce Lay, Oak Ridge Schools executive director of school leadership,  explained in an emailed response to The Oak Ridger s questions Monday that the policy applies to all of the buildings in the school system. “The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) removed temperature checks from their recommendations several weeks ago, but we chose to continue collecting data prior to making this change,” Lay stated.
