Union of B C Indian Chiefs releases statement of resignation of former Terrace Councilor

CFNR Network Mar 5, 2021 11:34 AM The Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs has released a statement regarding the resignation of former Terrace councilor Jessica McCallum-Miller. In a statement the Union says,” Jessica should not have to fight to be heard and respected at the table. She should not have to fight to assert and protect her cultural identity, practices, and traditions. Consequently, UBCIC is disappointed.” The union is urging the Mayor and Council to examine their processes and practices. McCallum-Miller resigned from the position on February 22. In a committee of the whole meeting council unanimously agreed to direct staff to reach out to the office of the Ombudsperson to conduct a review of the situation. However, the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs is calling on council to support a thorough investigation by an Indigenous person who is well informed on Indigenous Title and Rights.

City of Terrace seeking investigation into systemic racism allegations

Should the B.C. Office of the Ombudsperson decline the invitation, city staff have the flexibility to look into other bodies to conduct an independent review. “We unfortunately live in a society where systemic racism exists, accusations of systemic racism need to be taken very seriously, I think that having a conversation about systemic racism and the ways we can all improve and work towards diversity is important and timely,” said councillor Sean Bujtas during the meeting. McCallum-Miller, the youngest and first Indigenous councillor in Terrace’s history, resigned on Feb. 22. She said in a Facebook post that she questioned whether truth and reconciliation was a priority for council.
