Swedish automaker Volvo recently announced plans to migrate to pure battery-electric vehicles by 2030, joining a growing list of manufacturers phasing out internal combustion engines. In the process, Volvo also plans to shift to an online-only sales model as new electrified vehicles come to market.
The automaker has come a long way in the decade since Ford Motor Co. sold it to China s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group. During much of that time, Volvo was helmed by Håkan Samuelsson, a 70-year-old graduate of the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. Then serving as chief executive of European truck company MAN SE, Samuelsson was hired on as Volvo s CEO in October 2012.
