Senior Professor Jennifer Perera, the chairman of the committee appointed to make recommendations on how the last rites should be conducted, said that she and her committee had given permission for the burial and cremation and COVID burial.
Speaking to the Hiru News team she stated that the relevant permission was given for the burial through special criteria.
Secretary to the Ministry of Health S.H. Munasinghe appointed a special committee last December to make recommendations on the final course of COVID deaths.
Senior Professor Jennifer Perera, the former President of the Sri Lanka Vaccine and Infectious Diseases Forum and the Sri Lanka Medical Association, has been appointed as its Chairperson.

Cremation Vs. Burial: Expert Panel Revises Recommendation To Include Both Cremation And Burial Of COVID-19 Dead Bodies
The 11-Member Expert Panel appointed by the Ministry of Health has revised its recommendation to include both cremation and burial of COVID-19 dead bodies in Sri Lanka.
The panel chaired by Prof. Jennifer Perera, Senior Professor in Microbiology in its recommendations submitted to the Ministry of Health this week said, “’While firmly standing by on the previous recommendation and guidelines on exclusive cremations of dead bodies as the most appropriate method of disposal which was based on the understanding at the time, the expert committee has revised the recommendations on disposal of bodies to include both cremation and burial, while adhering to the specified safety precautions.”

Courtesy Hiru News Prof. Jennifer Perera, the Chairman of the expert committee appointed to determine the course of action to be taken regarding the corpses of people who have died due to coronavirus infection, has submitted its report to the Ministry of Health.
Steps were taken to appoint a new nine-member expert committee to give an opinion on whether the bodies of those who died after being infected with the virus should be cremated or buried.
The report of the expert committee chaired by Prof. Jennifer Perera was handed over to the Ministry of Health yesterday afternoon. br br Hiru news team was informed that the decision of the report of the expert committee has been an unanimous decision regarding the course of action to be taken regarding the dead bodies.
