Henderson County inn, family win holiday decoration contests

The Henderson County Tourism Development Authority has announced the winners of the Henderson County Merchant and Home Holiday Display Contests.  Each year the merchants become more creative with their festive storefront displays, the TDA said in a news release. This was the first year the HCTDA sponsored a Home Decoration Contest, which proved to be a very popular activity with families offering eye-catching presentations. The decoration contests offered residents an apportunity to celebrate the season while practicing social distancing by viewing the entries by car or foot. Home Decoration Contest winners There were 23 participants in the first Holiday Home Decoration Contest. The first-place winner was the Fletcher family at 318 Pressley Road in Hendersonville.

Police investigating armed robbery, assault at Smiley s Flea Market in Fletcher The Henderson County Sheriff s Office is requesting the public s assistance in identifying the persons responsible for an armed robbery and assault at Smiley s Flea Market at 5360 Hendersonville Road in Fletcher early Saturday morning. A tall, curly haired white male wearing a ball cap, blue jeans and armed with a handgun approached an individual and demanded personal property, the Sheriff s Office said in a news release. Anyone with information about the crime or the vehicle used by the suspect is asked to contact Detective Cpl. Brad Woodson of the Sheriff s Office s Major Crimes Unit at 828-694-2985, or by using the “Submit A Tip” feature on the HCSO Mobile app.

Pardee tightens visitor restrictions at all facilities to limit exposure Due to the increased spread of COVID-19 in Henderson County, and in order to limit the risk of exposure for patients, caregivers and employees, Pardee has reinstated more stringent restrictions for visitors across all of its facilities. The new visitor restrictions went into effect at 5 p.m. Sunday, Pardee officials said in a news release Sunday.  Visitor restrictions  No visitors will be permitted in any inpatient areas at Pardee Hospital until further notice, with the following exceptions:  One visitor will be allowed for: ● Pediatric patients ● In-person discharge instructions for outpatient surgery

Apple Valley Middle School s Shanice Hill earns Beginning Teacher award

Shanice Hill, a sixth-grade math teacher at Apple Valley Middle, is one of 27 finalists in the state for the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching 2020 Prudential NC Beginning Teacher of the Year Award. The Beginning Teacher of the Year process was developed to honor beginning teachers and to retain those who show promise as excellent teachers and education leaders in state public schools and public charter schools, according to a news release from Henderson County Public Schools. As we all know, challenges abound for any educator at the onset of their teaching career,” said Jan King, asstistant superintendent of instructional services.”Navigating the routine challenges of a first year teacher in the midst of a global pandemic makes Shanice Hill’s recognition even more impressive and meaningful.

Wendy Frye named assistant superintendent for Henderson County Public Schools

The Henderson County School Board approved the administrator appointment at Monday evening’s regular school board meeting. Since 2016, Frye has supervised and provided support to administrators, counselors and teachers of all high schools and the Henderson County Virtual Public School through her role as director of high schools. “I am humbled and honored to be given this new opportunity to serve the students and staff of Henderson County Public Schools. Growing up in a home where my father was a lifelong educator, I knew from an early age that there was no greater work than to help students achieve their goals and to support the staff who guide them,” Frye said in a news release.
