12 critical Covid patients die at Batra Hospital in Delhi due to lack of oxygen

New Delhi: Twelve critical Covid-19 patients died at the Batra Hospital in Delhi s Mehrauli area allegedly due to oxygen shortage. Six of the 12 people who died had been admitted to the hospital s ICU (intensive care unit) and among the deceased is the hospital’s gastroenteritis head, Dr R.K. Himthani (62).
NEW DELHI: Just a week after 20 critically ill Covid-19 patients died at Jaipur Golden Hospital in the Capital because of lack of oxygen, at least 12 Covid-19 patients, including a senior doctor, died due to the same reason at Batra Hospital in New Delhi on Saturday. Confirming this to TOI, Dr S C L Gupta, medical director of the hospital, said: “They could have been saved.”
The city has been gasping for oxygen for a week now and the crisis seems to have only deepened.
The 500-bed hospital had around 326 Covid-19 patients. Of these, according to the medical director, 220 were on high-flow nasal oxygen while 48 were in the ICU requiring bi-pap and ventilator support when the supply was disrupted around 12.30pm.
Hospitals across the national capital had sent out SOS messages last week about depleting supplies of oxygen.

NEW DELHI: Twelve patients at Delhi s Batra Hospital, including a senior doctor, died on Saturday and at least two other hospitals reported precipitous drops in their oxygen stocks, as the Delhi High Court stepped in and directed the Centre to provide the city with oxygen today itself or face contempt.
With the death of the 12 patients in the south Delhi hospital which announced at 12.30 pm that it had run out of oxygen the number of hospital patients who have lost their lives in the deepening crisis in the last eight days has gone up to 57.

The Covid lockdown in Delhi - due to end 5 am Monday - has been extended by a week, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted Saturday evening.
The national capital has been under lockdown since April 19, as the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) scrambles to contain a fresh wave of infections and a positivity rate that remains over 30 per cent. Lockdown in Delhi is being extended by one week, Mr Kejriwal tweeted.
This is the second extension of the lockdown in the national capital.
