CHARLESTON â West Virginia provided state-funded pre-Kindergarten last school year to a greater percentage of 4-year-olds than most states did, according to an institute at New Jerseyâs Rutgers University that has ranked the state highly in the past.
With 68% of 4-year-olds enrolled in the stateâs âuniversalâ pre-K system, West Virginia ranked No. 6 in the nation, according to the National Institute for Early Education Research.
âThe shining light in our entire education system is our universal pre-K,â state Schools Superintendent Clayton Burch said in a news conference with the institute.
But the institute has expressed concern nationally about the COVID-19 pandemicâs impact on preschool enrollment. Burch said heâs concerned, too.

TROY All classes at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) will take place in person this summer semester with COVID-19 vaccinations required of all students and staff, school officials announced Friday. As we anticipate a brighter future on the public health front, Rensselaer is making plans for a fully in-person Arch summer semester and 2021-2022 academic year, officials wrote in a memo. All classes and educational experiences for undergraduate and graduate students are expected to be held in-person, assuming the public health situation allows.

Northeastern University joined a small number of schools in the region that will require students to receive COVID-19 vaccinations before coming back to campus in the fall.
Brown University in Rhode Island, New Jersey’s Rutgers University are among the others. Northeastern is the first major school in Massachusetts to introduce a mandate for students and vaccinations.
“We expect to be back fully in-person at regular occupancy, including fully in-person teaching, and normal occupancy in residence halls and dining facilities,” said Ken Henderson, chancellor and senior vice president for learning at Northeastern.
