Fuel cell rail project takes off in Europe

Hydrogen fuel cell rail project takes off in Europe The EU project FCH2RAIL (Fuel Cell Hybrid Power Pack for Rail Applications) with partners from Belgium, Germany, Spain and Portugal is developing and testing a new zero-emission train prototype. Key to the idea is a combination of electricity from overhead wires with a fuel cell power pack. FCH2RAIL wants to offer an alternative to conventional diesel locomotives and trains that have to cross the sections without an overhead line. At the heart of the project is what the consortium calls “a hybrid bimodal propulsion system” that combines power from the overhead lines with a “fuel cell hybrid power pack”. The latter comprises hydrogen fuel cells and batteries. The concept: if energy is available from the overhead lines, the train uses it; if there is no overhead line, the energy comes from the fuel cell and battery system. Concrete performance data have not yet been published.

GSMA | Announcing the GSMA Innovation Fund for Mobile Internet Adoption and Digital Inclusion Grantees

Saloni Korlimarla Wednesday 7 April, 2021 Africa | Blog | blog | Connected Society | Digital literacy | Ethiopia | India | Mobile access and use | Mobile internet for women | Nigeria | Pakistan | South Asia | Sub-Saharan Africa | Uganda | Zambia | Zimbabwe For most of the world’s population, mobile is the primary way to access the internet. Although access to mobile internet is driving digital inclusion, there is still a ‘usage gap’ with over 3.4 billion people living in areas covered by mobile broadband networks but who are not using mobile internet services. As a result, they are missing out from access to information, services and life-enhancing opportunities, such as health information and guidance, financial services and employment opportunities.

The muon s magnetic moment fits just fine | Penn State University

The muon s magnetic moment fits just fine A new estimate of the strength of the sub-atomic particle s magnetic field aligns with the standard model of particle physics The muon s magnetic moment fits just fine Sam Sholtis April 07, 2021 UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. An extensive new calculation of the strength of the magnetic field around the muon a sub-atomic particle similar to, but heavier than, an electron closes the gap between theory and experimental measurements, bringing it in line with the standard model that has guided particle physics for decades. A paper describing the research by an international team of scientists appears April 8 in the journal Nature.

Green Talents 2021–International Competition for young researchers in sustainable development (Fully Funded to Germany)

Every year, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) hosts the prestigious  Green Talents – International Forum for High Potentials in Sustainable Development to promote the international exchange of innovative green ideas within the field of sustainability. The award, under the patronage of Minister Anja Karliczek, honours young researchers from numerous countries and scientific disciplines each year for their achievements and efforts to making their communities, countries and societies more sustainable. Selected by a jury of German experts, the award winners are granted unique access to the country’s research elite. Requirements Are you a promising scientist with innovative ideas and a strong focus on sustainable development? Does your research have the potential to help make the world a more sustainable place? Are you ready to collaborate with German experts and contribute to sustainability research in Germany?
