3D printing has opened up a completely new range of possibilities. One example is the production of novel turbine buckets. However, the 3D printing process often induces internal stress in the components which can in the worst case lead to cracks. Now a research team has succeeded in using neutrons from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) research neutron source for non-destructive detection of this internal stress - a key achievement for the improvement of the production processes.

Scientists of the JPI Oceans project ‘MiningImpact’ are embarking on a six-week expedition to the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone in the Pacific. Their goal is to carry out independent scientific monitoring of the test of a pre-prototype nodule collector machine that will be conducted in parallel from a second vessel by the Belgian company Global Sea Mineral Resources.
MiningImpact fully adheres to good scientific practice and all data will be made publicly available. The findings of this integrated impact analysis will be transferred into recommendations for improved environmental standards and guidelines of the Mining Code currently being drafted by the International Seabed Authority (ISA).
The Status of EU Food Contact Materials Tuesday, April 20, 2021
The European Union (EU) is currently evaluating its legislation on food contact materials (FCMs). So far, this process has identified some potential concerns due to the lack of harmonized regulations at the EU level for many types of FCMs. Nonetheless, the European Commission (EC) recently extended to the fourth quarter of 2022 the timeline for finalizing any proposals to revise FCM legislation. Due to the delay in completing this process, Germany, which had previously paused in its development of its own legislation to regulate food contact articles is now once again moving forward on its own. Additionally, Switzerland, while not a member of the EU, has made recent updates to it FCM regulations.
